A Small Opportunity
This project emerged from an idea I began developing for the Ezberbozan Tasarımlar competition but was unable to complete. The starting point was quite simple: transforming a wall-mounted toilet paper holder into a small bookshelf that could also hold a few books and magazines.
The aim was not merely to add a second function to an existing object. The real intention was to create a new possibility within everyday life.
Our habits are shaped not only by willpower, but also by the opportunities offered by the environments we live in. It is often no coincidence that someone who plays the piano grew up in a home where a piano was present. Having an object within reach, encountering it regularly, and seeing it as a natural part of daily life can gradually create the conditions for a behaviour or habit to develop.
This design follows the same idea. Encountering a book in a place where you already are, without having to actively seek it out, can create a small opportunity to turn a few idle minutes into time spent reading.
Of course, a shelf alone cannot create a reading habit. But design does not always need to produce major transformations. Sometimes, it simply makes a possibility visible and accessible.
And sometimes, a very small change in someone’s environment can make a much greater difference in their life than expected.
